“CAN we memorise the whole book of Hebrews?” Louisa asked. What a challenge! We met Louisa in mid November 2012. She was among twenty one high school graduates that came every day for 10 days to discuss the book of James, learn how to have quiet time and memorise scripture. In December 2012 we embarked on a bible reading Marathon: 31 days through the New Testament. After 20 days, Louisa sent me a text message to indicate that she had finished the Marathon. 11 Days early!
In January 2013, we began to read the Old Testament. This time we reduced the number of chapters to only 3 chapters a day so as to spend more time and glean from the scriptures. We meet every Friday from 9 a.m. to 12 Noon to share what we are learning from our bible reading and review the verses that we are memorising. We have now completed the 60 verses from the Topical Memory System (TMS). We have also been able to read and discuss from Genesis to 2nd Samuel in addition to having read through the New Testament. For Louisa the experience has been very refreshing and insightful. She now wants us to memorise the whole book of Hebrews. We agreed that we should start by memorising the book of Philippians. Louisa is just one among 7 committed high school graduates who come on Friday and are so eager to learn from the scriptures. The others are Ivan, Zenas, Nancy, Lynn, David and Steve. These young people have truly challenged us as we have led them. They disagreed with us when we thought we should take a break from our Friday meetings just before Easter. They wondered why we should take a break from meeting and discussing God’s word and memorise scripture. The “us” and “we”, are Silpa, Jeanette and I. These two wonderful ladies not only welcomed the appeal to work with me to help disciple these young high school graduates but have been enthusiastic and have taken initiatives on different fronts. So, like Paul, I am very thankful to God.
“I thank God, who put into the heart of Titus the same concern I have for you. For Titus not only welcomed our appeal, but he is coming to you with much enthusiasm and his own initiative” 2 Corinthians 8:16 -17
Our work has been cut out for us:
- Recruiting high school graduates to Christ and helping them build deep meaningful relationships with Him that as they walk through life they will not just use God to solve life issues but move through and use those life issues toward finding God.
- Developing a heart for the people we are raising and helping them develop a burden and a passion for others.
- Raise future leaders from among those who distinguish themselves.
Please pray for us as we labour towards this end.
